16 Jul - James Gunn seems to be breathing a sigh of relief, as the first ever DC superhero under his management and direction, "Superman" opened to more than USD 200 million at the box office globally.

Sharing his thoughts on the film's three-day success, the filmmaker and DC Studios' co-head expressed on Threads, "I'm incredibly grateful for your enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days. We've had a lot of "Super" in Superman over the years, and I'm happy to have made a movie that focuses on the "man" part of the equation - a kind person always looking out for those in need."

"That that resonates so powerfully with so many people across the world is in itself a hopeful testament to the kindness and quality of human beings. Thank you," he added.

The USD 122 million opening is the biggest launch for a Superman film in the US, surpassing the previous record held by Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" at USD 116.7 million in 2013. Globally, the movie made USD 217 million following its release on 11 July.

It was last week that Gunn, who directed the film with a USD 225 million budget, told the media that the movie did not need to make USD 700 million to be considered a success.

"They hear these numbers that the movie's only going to be successful if it makes USD 700 million or something and it's just complete and utter nonsense. It doesn't need to be as big of a situation as people are saying," he said.
