Netflix and Warner Bros. join forces in landmark deal
5 Dec - Netflix has emerged as the winning bidder for Warner Bros. Discovery's studio and streaming businesses, as Deadline has reported, marking a major shift for the streaming giant.

The deal would see Netflix acquire Warner Bros. Studios and HBO Max, bringing iconic franchises like Harry Potter, DC Comics, and Game of Thrones under its control. This represents one of Netflix's largest acquisitions in its history, as the company has traditionally preferred organic growth over major deals.

The auction process was highly competitive, with Paramount and Comcast also submitting bids for the company. Paramount had pushed aggressively to secure the entire Warner Bros. Discovery operation, arguing it was the only bidder with a clear regulatory path to closing. However, Netflix's offer focused specifically on the studio and streaming assets rather than the full company.

For moviegoers, the acquisition raises questions about theatrical releases. Netflix has reportedly committed to honouring Warner Bros.' existing theatrical commitments, though the streamer is known for favouring shorter exclusive cinema windows before films arrive on streaming platforms.

Warner Bros. Discovery put itself up for sale in October after receiving multiple offers from Paramount. The company had originally planned to split into two separate businesses but opted for a sale instead.
