23 May - Sushmita Sen recently celebrated the 31st year of her winning Miss Universe by sharing never-before-seen photos from her time at the pageant back in 1994.

On 21 May, the beauty queen-turned-actress took to Instagram to walk down the memory lane, writing, "21 May 1994. A historical win that introduced an [18-year-old Indian girl] to the Universe!! Opening up a world of possibilities, highlighting the strength of hope, the power of inclusion, the generosity of love..."

"To travel the world & to have the privilege of meeting some of the most inspiring people...life defining for sure!!! Thank you God, Maa @subhra51 & Baba @sensubir."

Sushmita then continued, "Happy 31st Anniversary of India's first ever victory at Miss Universe!!! To have the honour of representing my country, I will proudly cherish forever!!!"

Sushmita became the first Indian beauty queen to win the title in a ceremony held in Manila. She was crowned by previous year's winner, Dayanara Torres.

The same year Sushmita won Miss Universe, Aishwarya Rai also won Miss World for India, the second time after Reita Faria won in 1966. It was the first time India won both coveted titles in the same year.

The double win was repeated once again in 2000, when Priyanka Chopra won Miss World and Lara Dutta won Miss Universe, with an addition of Dia Mirza winning Miss Asia Pacific International.
