Written by Ali Hazelwood originally as a "Star Wars" fan fiction about Rey and Kylo Ren (which stars Bateman's wife Daisy Ridley), the novel remained in the NYT Bestseller list for more than 40 weeks and was praised for centering on a woman in STEM and academia.

Reinhart first teased fans of the novel with a possible adaptation after she shared a selfie of her holding the book while being in what looks like a lab.
