Actor-director Bharathiraja breathed his last at home in Chennai
10 Jun - It was reported that Bharathiraja has recently passed away.

Reports of the multi-hyphenate's passing was revealed on 10 June, with sources stating that he died at his residence in Chennai. However, the exact cause of death is still unknown.

The actor had been in poor health since son Manoj passed away in March last year from cardiac arrest. His brother Jayaraj Periyamayathevar once revealed that Bharathiraja's mental health was very low following the loss.

Making his debut in 1977 with "16 Vayathinile," Bharathiraja had directed, produced, penned and acted in many Tamil movies throughout his career, and won multiple awards including six National Film Awards.

In 2004, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri award, India's fourth-highest civilian honour.

He had helmed nearly 40 films including "Kizhake Pogum Rail," "Sigappu Rojakkal," and "Alaigal Oivathillai," and played a role in movies like "Eeswaran," "Thudarum," "Pandianadu," and "Maharaja". His last film will be "Pulavar".
