27 Aug - The Japanese Film Festival (JFF) returns for its 22nd edition in Malaysia, once again bringing another exciting showcase of Japanese cinema. Organised by the Japan Foundation (JF), JFF in Malaysia has grown into one of the most anticipated international film events. The Japanese Film Festival 2026 will take place at the following GSC cinemas in West and East Malaysia:
This year, JFF will screen a total of 14 carefully curated Japanese films spanning diverse genres, including anime, kabuki-related films, suspense, comedy, heartfelt dramas alongside 4K remasters. JFF 2026 opens with TOKYO TAXI, the latest film by the contemporary Japanese master filmmaker, director YAMADA Yoji, as part of a special retrospective honoring the filmmaker's remarkable legacy. Turning 95 this year, YAMADA has dedicated more than six decades shaping Japanese cinema through his humanistic storytelling and memorable portrayals of everyday life. Widely regarded as one of Japan's most influential directors, his works continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
In addition to the YAMADA Yoji Retrospective, featuring TOKYO TAXI, A DISTANT CRY FROM SPRING, TORA-SAN'S MANY SPLINTERED LOVE, and a limited screening of Renjishi (The Father and Son Shishi Lions), JFF 2026 presents a number of other special programmes.
Namely, a lineup of 'Girl Power' films, featuring female protagonists and their journeys of resilience, self-discovery, and determination. Titles include FUJIKO, PUREHEARTED, and Hula Girls - 4K Remastered -, which celebrates diverse experiences and perspectives of women through heartfelt and inspiring storytelling. Audiences can also look forward to a Special Screening of KOKUHO on 9 September at GSC Mid Valley and GSC MyTOWN as well as a prelude screening of the beloved classic Tora-san, Our Lovable Tramp on 5 September, ahead of the festival's official opening at the JFKL Library. Complementing the film line-up is two 4K remastered classics, including one from the legendary director, KUROSAWA Akira, offering audiences a chance to rediscover classic Japanese films in restored quality. Beyond the screenings, the JFF Filmmaking Workshop returns to provide aspiring filmmakers to deepen their understanding of cinema, connect with industry professionals, and explore the creative process behind filmmaking. The workshop, co-organised with Canon Malaysia, brought together more than 25 film students from five Malaysian universities for a three-day programme from 31 July to 2 August 2026 at Multimedia University (MMU)'s Faculty of Cinematic Arts. Mentored by acclaimed Malaysian filmmakers from Team Imaginur, namely director Nik Amir Mustapha, cinematographer Idham Mad Din, and editor Johan Arif Mazlan, participants were challenged to produce a trailer for the Japanese Film Festival 2026. The completed works will be premiered as previews during the festival's opening ceremony and uploaded to JFKL's YouTube channel, providing students with a platform to showcase their works. Participating institutions included Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA), New Era University College (NEUC), Sunway University, Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The workshop reflects JFKL's ongoing commitment to nurturing young filmmaking talent and strengthening connections within Malaysia's creative community. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to join the JFF Stamp Rally and collect stamps throughout the festival to redeem exclusive goodies and prizes. All films will be presented in Japanese with English subtitles. Tickets are priced at RM10.00, except for KOKUHO, which will be screened on a free-admission basis with prior booking required via JFKL's CloudJoi platform.
