29 Sep - After making billions for Marvel, director Jon Watts is now moving back to his previous franchise, and this time it is for Lucasfilm.

The filmmaker has been announced as the director of the first instalment of a new Star Wars trilogy, which is penned by Simon Kinberg. It marks Watts' return to the universe, following the 2024 series, "Skeleton Crew."

It was previously reported that the trilogy will act as the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga, and that Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in the previous instalments, will appear in the new project in some capacity.

Watts is most known for the first three Marvel/Sony Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland, prior to Destin Daniel Cretton's "Brand New Day". The three films made a combined total of roughly USD 3.93 billion at the worldwide box office, with "No Way Home" (2021) amassing USD 1.92 billion.

It is noted that the only Star Wars movie that has been in development is "Starfighter," starring Ryan Gosling. It is set to be in theatres in May next year in time for Star Wars' 50th anniversary.
