13 Jul - Stephen Chow still has the mojo, as it was revealed that his new film, "Kung Fu Soccer" has already made bank at the box office in China.

It was revealed that the movie, which was released on 11 July, has exceeded RMB 200 million mark (approx. USD 29.5 million) by 7pm, according to Mingpao.

The film marks Stephen's return to directing since 2019's "The New King of Comedy" and has been highly anticipated since he announced the project in 2024.

The film has also received a 9.4 rating on Maoyan platform, though opinions are polarised. Some criticise it for using plot points from over 20 years ago, having outdated dialogue, and using special effects inferior to his previous work. On the other hand, many netizens defended the film, praising its uniquely Stephen Chow mou lei tau style.

The movie stars Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat, and Lay Zhang, with special appearances by Carina Lau and Japanese actor Takeru Satoh. Other notable cast members include Sisley Choi, Louis Cheung, MC Jin, former Chinese women's national soccer player Zhao Lina, and the Japanese dance troupe Avantgardey.

The film tells the story of the Emei women's football team, who integrate traditional kung fu into modern soccer to compete in the "Supreme Invincible Cup" women's football tournament, overcoming prejudice and achieving a stunning victory.
