"Michael" overtakes "Bohemian Rhapsody" as top musical biopic

14 Jul - "Michael" has now crossed USD 1 billion, solidifying its title as the highest grossing biopic of all time.

The movie, which chronicles the life of King of Pop Michael Jackson, has become the second movie to do so this year after "Super Mario Galaxy," and marks the first 1 billion for a Lionsgate film. It is noted that prior to "Michael," the studio's biggest film was 2013's "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire".

The film was able to achieve this feat thanks to its delayed release in Japan, with the movie making USD 37.5 million in the country.

The movie has now reached USD 1 billion mark

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement, "Michael's success was driven by our phenomenal partnership with our remarkable filmmakers Graham King and Antoine Fuqua, the incomparable cast led by Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo and Nia Long, and our successful collaboration with the Michael Jackson Estate."
