19 Feb - Chinese New Year is already on Day 3, and the cinemas are still buzzing. If you haven't watched "Night King" yet, what are you waiting for?

When director Jack Ng brought Sammi Cheng, Fish Liew, and Miko Wong to Pavilion KL on 11 February for a special fan meet, over 5,000 fans turned up on the rainy Wednesday afternoon - just five days before the nationwide premiere. Sammi hadn't done a promotional appearance in Malaysia in nearly a decade, and the crowd let her know she was missed. Chants of "Hou Gwai Leng!" echoed through the mall the moment she stepped out. She took it in stride, grinning and firing back, "After watching 'Night King', make sure to catch my concert!"

The evening had its emotional peak too, when director Jack Ng made a surprise announcement on stage. Malaysian talent Fish Liew has been nominated for Best Actress at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards. Sammi immediately offered a warm embrace and led the massive crowd in a collective cheer of "Congratulations!" in a touching display of camaraderie.

"Night King" pairs Dayo Wong and Sammi Cheng as bickering exes - he's Foon, a legendary nightclub manager, and she's Madame V, his ex-wife who waltzes back in as the club's new CEO. Sammi has described Dayo as a "treasure" and a "new landmark," someone whose grasp of character caught even her off guard. She also revealed that she added a signature mole near her lip just for this role - a detail Dayo himself found intriguing.

Rounding out the cast is a lineup of stunning hostesses played by Louise Wong, Fish Liew, Renci Yeung, Mandy Tam, Sumling Li, Miko Wong, Hazel Lam, and Tang Lai-ying - all channelling the old-school glamour of East Tsim Sha Tsui's nightclub scene. A lot of talent in one film.

It is worth noting that the Malaysian release is completely uncut, identical to the Hong Kong version. Director Jack Ng credited the Malaysian Film Censorship Board for being more open-minded these days, so the Malaysian audiences are getting the full experience with nothing trimmed. The director is also not shy about his ambitions, in that he wants this film to out-perform "A Guilty Conscience."

"Night King" is in cinemas now. The long weekend isn't over yet - so go catch it. Gong Xi Fa Cai.
