"Spider-Man: No Way Home" says no to cutting the Statue of Liberty scene
26 Feb - Sony Pictures' Tom Rothman believes that "Spider-Man: No Way Home" would have made it higher in the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time, if not for its China ban.

The studio's chairman and CEO recently spoke to Matt Belloni on The Town podcast, saying that it "pisses him off" to have to say that the movie made USD 1.9 billion globally when it should have been more.

"You say, 'USD 1.9 billion, what's wrong with 2 [billion]?' Well, it didn't get into China, but in my mind [the film's box office is] over 2 [billion] because I know what we would have done in China," he said.

Rothman stated that the China Film Administration wanted them to cut the Statue of Liberty scene from the movie for it to be released in the country, despite the fact that that is where the climax is.

"Also, I really didn't look forward to sitting in front of Congress telling them why I cut the Statue of Liberty out at the request of the Chinese Communist Party," he added.

It is noted that the previous movie, "Spider-Man: Far from Home" made USD 200 million in China alone.
