"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" overtakes "Avengers: Endgame" for biggest US opening

4 Aug - "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has officially surpassed "Avengers: Endgame" for the biggest US opening weekend of all time.

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film made USD 360 million in North America, edging out "Endgame's" previous record of USD 357 million set back in 2019. Globally, however, the film still trails behind, amassing USD 932 million compared to "Endgame's" massive USD 1.2 billion opening.

Still, it marks Sony Pictures' biggest global opening ever. Chairman Tom Rothman celebrated the achievement, saying, "Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign. Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it."

And it is beginning to look like a great year for newly-weds Tom Holland and Zendaya, as "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" also marks the biggest domestic and global opening for the couple, as well as the biggest opening weekend of the post-COVID era.

It follows Mr and Mrs Tom Holland's earlier box office success this year with Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," where they played Telemachus and Athena. That epic film has since made USD 911 million worldwide and is now closing in on the USD 1 billion mark.
