10 Jun - The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) has unveiled the official programme lineup for its highly anticipated 9th edition.

Taking place from 18 to 25 July 2026, the festival will present 65 films from 35 countries and regions in 27 languages, bringing together an inspiring spectrum of cinematic voices, cultures, and perspectives from around the world, featuring 2 World Premieres, 1 International Premiere, 3 Asian Premieres, 12 Southeast Asian Premieres, and 28 Malaysian Premieres.

The 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) will open with the world premiere of Malaysian feature "BAGA: Tomorrow Belongs to No One," directed by Ariff Zulkarnain. Set in a conservative fishing village in Kuala Terengganu, "BAGA" follows Jani, a struggling boatman battling addiction, and Melur, a batik artisan dreaming of a better future. When an unexpected pregnancy changes their lives, Jani is drawn toward a dangerous path in pursuit of hope and survival. As MIFFest's Opening Film, BAGA represents a powerful showcase of contemporary Malaysian storytelling and emerging local talent on the world stage.

Closing the festival is "Yellow Letters," winner of the Golden Bear at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. Directed by İlker Çatak, the film follows a celebrated Turkish artist couple whose lives unravel after becoming targets of state scrutiny following the premiere of their latest production. A moving exploration of artistic freedom, resilience, and personal sacrifice, the movie provides a fitting and unforgettable conclusion to this year's festival.

Master Storyteller Lee Chang-dong Honoured with MIFFest Lifetime Achievement Award

The 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) proudly honours legendary South Korean filmmaker LEE Chang-dong with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his outstanding contribution to world cinema and his profound influence on generations of filmmakers and audiences worldwide.

Widely regarded as one of the defining voices of contemporary cinema, Lee Chang-dong has built an extraordinary body of work distinguished by its emotional depth, literary sensibility, and unwavering exploration of the human condition. As part of this special tribute, MIFFest will present two of LEE's most celebrated masterpieces; "Peppermint Candy," a landmark drama that examines personal and national trauma through an innovative reverse-chronological narrative, and "Oasis," an unforgettable and deeply moving romance that explores love, isolation, and human dignity with extraordinary sensitivity.

Celebrating the Global Impact of Action Icon Wu Jing

MIFFest will present the Excellent Achievement in Film Award to Chinese actor, director, and filmmaker Wu Jing, recognising his outstanding achievements and lasting influence on contemporary action cinema. From his early breakthrough performances to becoming one of China's most successful and influential filmmakers, Wu Jing has continually redefined the possibilities of action storytelling through his dedication, versatility, and cinematic vision.

In conjunction with the award, MIFFest will showcase "Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert," a sweeping wuxia epic that highlights Wu Jing's commanding screen presence, dynamic action choreography, and enduring appeal as one of Asia's most celebrated action stars.

Hong Kong Cinema in Flux

A longstanding highlight of MIFFest's international programming, Hong Kong Cinema in Flux continues the festival's enduring collaboration with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur, alongside support from the Film Development Fund, the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

This year's programme shines a spotlight on a new generation of Hong Kong filmmakers whose works capture the complexities of a rapidly evolving social and cultural landscape. Headlined by the critically acclaimed "Ciao UFO," recipient of multiple honours at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards, the programme also features "Bird of Paradise," "The Dating Menu," "Dog Day Evening" and "Unidentified Murder."

New Rhythms of Indian Cinema

Continuing its valued partnership with the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India, MIFFest proudly presents the return of New Rhythms of Indian Cinema, a special showcase celebrating the remarkable diversity, artistic richness, and evolving voices of one of the world's most influential film industries.

The programme is anchored by "Sholay," Ramesh Sippy's legendary cinematic masterpiece that redefined popular Indian filmmaking and remains one of the most celebrated films in cinema history. Complementing this classic is "Black Friday," the acclaimed crime drama by Jury President Anurag Kashyap, whose bold and uncompromising storytelling helped usher in a new era of independent Indian cinema.

The showcase further explores contemporary and regional perspectives through "Mayilaa," directed by Semmalar Annam and "Parikrama: The Journey" by renowned filmmaker Goutam Ghose and "Shape of Momo" by Tribeny Rai, each reflecting distinctive cultural identities, human experiences, and social realities from across the Indian subcontinent.

New Programme Highlights - Korean Cinema: A Culture in Motion

Making its debut this year, "Korean Cinema: A Culture in Motion" celebrates the richness and global influence of South Korean cinema through two specially selected films: "Bluefish," directed by Lee Sang-hoon, and "Mr. Kim Goes to the Cinema," directed by Busan International Film Festival founder Kim Dong-ho.

The programme not only showcases the diversity of Korean storytelling but also pays tribute to Kim Dong-ho, who has served as MIFFest's Honorary Chairman for the past nine years.

New Programme Highlights - Russian Film Week

Presented in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and ROSKINO, Russian Film Week makes its inaugural appearance at MIFFest with a curated showcase of five films spanning classic masterpieces and contemporary works.

The programme includes legendary titles such as "The Cranes Are Flying" and "Andrei Rublev," alongside modern productions including "Sidney Lumet's Birthday," "Family Happiness" and "Lefty." Together, the selection offers Malaysian audiences a rare opportunity to explore the breadth of Russian cinematic heritage and contemporary creativity, while fostering greater cultural exchange between the two countries.

The New Pulse of Southeast Asian Cinema: ASEAN On Screen Returns at MIFFest

Returning for its second year, ASEAN On Screen continues to celebrate the diversity and creative vitality of Southeast Asian cinema through six films from Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.

This year's selection spans an impressive range of genres and perspectives, from the poignant Vietnamese road drama "Bury Us in a Lone Desert" and the gripping Indonesian thriller "DOPAMINE," to the thought-provoking Philippine political drama "Republic of Pipolipinas" and the entertaining Singaporean mockumentary "The Sandbox."

Representing Malaysia is "Tears in Kuala Lumpur," a haunting and atmospheric mystery that explores themes of memory, loss, and human connection against the backdrop of the capital city, while Thailand's "Phra Ruang: Rise of the Empire" offers a compelling reimagining of history through a contemporary cinematic lens.

Cinema Under the Stars: MIFFest's Beloved Open Air Cinema Returns

The popular Open Air Cinema returns to the Sunken Garden at MyTOWN Shopping Centre, offering audiences the opportunity to enjoy Malaysian films under the stars in a vibrant community setting. This year's programme features a curated selection of beloved local films alongside a special showcase of nine short films presented in collaboration with the Raintown Film Festival.

MIFFest also announced the launch of "Impian Di Seoul," the second season of the K-Style Micro Drama series presented with official Korean Lifestyle Partner NONGSHIM, highlighting the growing influence of micro-drama storytelling within today's evolving content landscape.

Road to Glory: MGGA 2026 Nominees Set the Stage for Cinema's Biggest Night

The race for the prestigious Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA) 2026 is officially underway as MIFFest unveils this year's International Competition lineup ahead of the awards ceremony, taking place on 25 July 2026 at Mega Star Arena, Sungei Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur.

Dedicated to discovering emerging filmmakers with three or fewer narrative feature films, the Competition section continues to spotlight bold new voices shaping the future of global cinema.

This year's selection brings together ten compelling films from around the world, spanning intimate coming-of-age stories such as "Ah Girl" (Singapore) and "Girl" (Taiwan), the New York-set survival drama "Lucky Lu," and gripping titles including "BROKEN VOICES," "The Red Hangar," "Riverstone," and "SILENT REBELLION." The lineup is further enriched by the poetic "Aisha Can't Fly Away" and the imaginative fantasy "Becoming Human."

Representing Malaysia in competition is "The Waves Will Carry Us," a darkly comedic road-trip drama that anchors the lineup with a distinctive local voice. Together, these ten films showcase the diversity, creativity, and emerging talents that define MIFFest's commitment to discovering the next generation of international filmmakers, all vying for the festival's highest honours at MGGA 2026.

Visionaries of Asian Cinema Unite for the 9th MIFFest Jury Panel

The festival also unveiled its distinguished final jury panel for the 9th MIFFest International Competition, bringing together an esteemed group of filmmakers and industry leaders from across Asia whose work has helped shape and redefine contemporary cinema in their respective countries.

Leading the jury as Jury President is acclaimed Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, widely recognised for transforming the landscape of Indian independent cinema through his bold, uncompromising storytelling. Joining him are internationally acclaimed director Midi Z from Taiwan, celebrated Thai actor and producer Ananda Everingham, award-winning Hong Kong production designer Man Lim-Chung and renowned Malaysian actress Sharifah Amani.

Together, they will evaluate this year's International Competition selections and determine the recipients of MIFFest's highest honours, recognising the emerging voices set to shape the future of world cinema.

As the 9th Malaysia International Film Festival approaches, audiences are invited to immerse themselves in a week of stories that transcend borders, cultures, and languages. Beyond the screenings, festivalgoers can also look forward to a dynamic lineup of masterclasses, forums and panel discussions featuring acclaimed filmmakers, industry leaders, and creative talents from around the world, offering unique insights into the art, craft, and future of cinema.

Festival access remains highly accessible, with complimentary accreditation available for members of the media, while students can enjoy a special accreditation pass at RM29, valid for up to 10 screenings.

For the general public, the MIFFest Movie Pass is available at RM59, granting access to an exciting selection of films throughout the festival. Returning as the Official Bank Partner for the second consecutive year, Hong Leong Bank offers cardholders an exclusive promotional rate of RM49. Both accreditation and movie passes are open for registration from 9 June till 25 July 2026, with first come first serve basis as applications are limited, at www.miffest.com.my.
