2 Apr - The film "823 Hostage Crisis", inspired by the real-life Manila hostage incident in 2010, is now in cinemas.

The movie recently held its premiere screening and press conference at TGV Sunway Velocity. Lead actors Tong Bing Yu, Sahronizam Noor, along with director-producer Tony Leung, were present to share insights into the production and creative process.

Based on the internationally shocking tourist bus hijacking, the film reconstructs the intense standoff and explores the psychological struggles, moral dilemmas, and life-and-death decisions faced by those involved.

Tong Bing Yu, who plays survivor Yee Xiao Ling, through whose perspective the story unfolds, shared during the press conference that the role was a major challenge.

Having not acted for three years following the pandemic, she was also dealing with personal struggles, including her sister's stroke and her own health issues, which left a visible scar on her face.

"When the producer first approached me, I wasn't sure if I was ready to return. But the character mirrored my own journey, both physically and emotionally scarred, so I decided to take on the challenge," she said.

Tong also revealed that she met the real-life survivor prior to filming to better understand her emotional journey. "The biggest challenge was that almost every scene required crying. There were days I cried from 5am until 9pm - it felt like releasing three years' worth of emotions all at once."

Sahronizam Noor, who plays the hostage-taker Paisa, described the role as emotionally intense and complex. "He is not simply a 'villain', but someone who gradually breaks down under pressure and desperation. I did extensive psychological research to understand his motivations."

He hopes audiences will reflect not only on the conflict, but also on the deeper social issues and human complexities behind it.

"823 Hostage Crisis" co-stars Teoh Yeow Dong, Fish Liew, Luvin Ho, Jovi Heng, Crystal Chow, Yuan Teng, and Joey Daud. Special appearances include Mimi Kung, Helena Law, Don Li, Terence Lam, Amy Tam, Peter Pang, and Henick Chou. It is released nationwide today.
