This Korean adventure film follows a boy, Deok-Su, who lost his father and younger sister while attempting to escape from a war zone. With his remaining family members, they make their way to the Southern port city of Busan. They live there as war refugees with his aunt. During their stay in Busan, Deok-Su remembers and keeps the promise he made to his father at the war zone, which is to protect and take care of his family. The young boy`s vow marked the beginning of a lifelong promise spanning 60 years.

Ayah dan adik seorang budak lelaki bernama Deok-Su maut apabila cuba melarikan diri dari sebuah kawasan peperangan. Deok-Su dan ahli keluarganya yang lain berjaya melarikan diri ke Busan. Mereka memulakan kehidupan sebagai pelarian tetapi Deok-Su tidak pernah melupakan janjinya terhadap ayahnya, iaitu dia akan terus sedaya upaya menjaga keluarganya. Janji itu dipegang oleh Deok-Su seumur hidupnya.

The Good, the Bad and the Promise:

• There are inaccuracies when it comes to the small details (Czech signs in a Germany street), but the bigger picture remains mostly accurate, providing non-Koreans a reliable glimpse into the history of Korea.

• The music is no doubt touching but can also be a little too forced, drying up tears rather than causing them to flow as intended. The comical sound effects too do not fit with the general feel of the film.

• The acting may come off as wooden at times but it is enough to convey the emotions needed for the story.

Trivia:

• Director Yoon Je-Kyoon named the lead characters after his own real-life parents, Deok-Su and Young-ja.
