Around 1948, in a small southern Chinese town filled with ruins, Zhou Yuwen is living a dull and uneventful life with her sick husband, Dai Liyan. The war not only took away Liyan`s family fortune but also his will to live. Every day, Yuwen goes out in the morning to buy groceries and fetching medicine for Liyan. After wandering along the city walls for a long while, she comes back home, only to exchange a few words with him, and then spends the rest of her day sitting in her sister-in-law`s room, doing embroidery and feeling lonely. For Yuwen, the city wall is the only place in town that still feels alive. But everything changes when Yuwen`s former lover pays an unplanned visit to the residence.
