Andrey Rublev (MIFFEST)

Russia, the early 15th century. The country is torn by brutal princely feuds, Tatar invasions, famine, and plague. Amidst this turbulent era, Andrei Rublev, a devout monk and icon painter, travels the land with fellow monks. Witnessing the cruelty of men - blinded artists, sacked towns, pagan folk, and senseless violence by ruling princes - Rublev falls into deep spiritual crisis. Horrified by the bloody Tatar raid on Vladimir and the murder of a young jester, he vows silence, abandoning his art and faith in humanity. Years later, during another invasion, a boy named Boriska casts a giant bell for a new church using only his dead father`s secret knowledge. The boy`s desperate, silent faith rekindles Rublev`s lost hope, moved by his act of creation against all odds. Rublev breaks his silence and returns to painting. The film ends with Rublev`s real masterpiece - his icon of the Trinity - shown in color, a symbol of grace and art`s triumph over chaos.
