Bandslam? More like bandslame...

Bringing in the presence of "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens and singer Alyson Michalka (better known as Aly from the music duo Aly & AJ), they are undoubtedly the main attraction that will get people to want to watch this movie in the beginning. As the story goes, a geeky yet musically wise Will (Gaelan Connell) and his mother (Lisa Kudrow) moves to a new town and starts life anew. Before you know it, Hudgens comes into the picture with her character Sa5m ("The '5' is silent," she explains), who has a loner vibe with her nose is constantly buried into her book and a voice that is much deeper. An outcast, she then makes friends with Will and they both hit it off as a rather cute and awkward couple. Through the process, gifted singer-songwriter Charlotte Barnes (Michalka) asks Will to manage her fledgling rock band. She appears to have just one goal in mind: go head-to-head against her egotistical musician ex-boyfriend, Ben, at the biggest event of the year, Bandslam. Against all odds, their band develops a sound might just win themselves a record deal through the battle of the bands competition.

Not to be a spoilsport, but in all frankness, the movie was extremely uninteresting and ironically - musically challenged. One would expect the soundtrack to be a toe-tapper at least, but it didn't fare well for itself even with the band's creative instrumental composition of trumpets and a cello apart from the conventional keyboard, drums, and electric guitars. Never more than typical tween-pop, this reviewer gives credit to the last number, David Gate's "Everything I Own", performed by Hudgens' late-period turn at the microphone during Bandslam wasn't too shabby. With the band name "I Can't Go On I'll Go On", it sounds pretty darn good matching up to the band's clumsy characters.

Gaelan Connell did reasonably well as the dorky new guy in town, while "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow is surprisingly good as Will's overprotective mother. She shows a great range of depth, emotion and comedic timing. Hudgens's doesn't get as much runtime as Michalka, but she does have some truly charming moments with Connell that's worth remembering. Michalka wasn't as convincing as it should be when her character's storyline takes a surprising turn.

Overall, the best part about "Bandslam" is the band's name - "I Can't Go On I'll Go On".
