SKRIP 7707

"Skrip 7707" is about a producer in the process of producing a horror film but is faced with complications in getting a script for the movie. He then asks his personal assistant to hold a gathering where people can volunteer to share frightening stories and tell personal experiences about their supernatural encounters. The gathering was recorded on videotape for reference. The next day, when the producer is writing his script, his personal assistant came by to tell him that the advertisement for the gathering received a lot of response from people who would like to share their stories and his assistant also reminded him that the gathering would be held on the same night. The producer was confused and terrified to hear the news as he thought the gathering was already held the night before. Out of curiosity, the producer played the tape again only to find out that the tape only managed to record the audio of event but not the visuals. The question is, who were those people that he met the night before?

In the latest A. Razak Mohaideen offering, as many as nine ghost stories are combined to make a film. It starts off with a movie director named Burn (Norman Abd. Halim) who tasks his assistant Syida (Fouziah Gous) to set up some meetings with people so as to get ideas for a new horror movie.

It's quite a novelty because usually an all-in-one horror movie contains only three of four stories. Highlights include a violent fight scene between Bob (Jehan Miskin) with a gruesome-looking man (which was cut by the censors) and a traditional abortion scene with Ayu (Fasha Sandha). There is also an Almy Nadia scene involving the cannibalism of a live human baby!

In terms of acting, we get to see the reappearance of Norman Abd. Halim who has ceased acting for some time now, his last film being "Nafas Cinta" (1999). It's probably been so long for him that his acting is a little stiff. The same can be said of Fouziah Gous ("Rasukan Ablasa" and "Maut", both 2009) who comes off rather amateurish. However, since this movie was shot so long ago before those two movies were released, this strangely means that she has improved! However, an actress who definitely hasn't made much headway is Fasha Sandha ("Anak Halal" 2007, "Evolusi KL Drift" 2008) who once again fails to shine. Controversial for many accusations, among them 'stealing' the husband of fellow actress Nora Danish, her acting is poor and her voice is rather annoying.

The other cast do well but the traditional special effects on the ghosts are substandard. For example, the first story in which a man is haunted by an Indian woman (comedienne Kenchana Devi). Not only was the apparition not scary here, it was even hilarious!

However, kudos to the editors and sound mixing crew behind the project because Digital Dolby Surround sounded like it ought to in this movie!

"Skrip 7707" took some three years to make and it seems that although it does have a good concept, it's still no better than the director's other horror movies like "Rasukan Ablasa" (2009) and "Tujuh Perhentian" (2004). The main problem with the movie lies in the fact that all nine short stories (which take about 10 minutes each) do not climax. Only a few parts are scary while some are not at all.
