It seems as though this man-eating-fish flick emphasises on butts, boobs and blood.
Women are definitely being exploited as their show off their bikini bodies in this gory cult remake "Piranha".
Spring Break in the States means only one thing: PARTY! As though the movie revolves around the famed "Girls Gone Wild" franchise, Jerry O' Connell portrays a video producer who goes to Lake Victoria, Arizona for some bikini-clad babes' video shoot. Unfortunately, a huge tremor beneath causes the lake's river bed to open, setting free scores of prehistoric piranhas. As if they've been 'freed out of jail', these flesh-eating creatures terrorises the fun-seeking visitors in Lake Victoria, literally painting the water red!
Director Alexandre Aja ("High Tension") really does know what the audiences are looking for when planning for the "Piranha" remake from 1978. Over the top scenes, including the characters, language, dialogues and blood were all over the place, as soon as these Spring Break youngsters are gored by scores of hungry piranhas. At times, even the extras in "Piranha" look comical as they 'pretend' to scream and shout for help! The reviewer reckons as long as a movie has sex, blood and rowdy girls, even silly and ridiculous plot lines seem bearable, eh?
As rowdy as them girls may be, Malaysian audiences will not get that 'golden' chance to watch porn star Riley Steele's nude bathing scene. Nonetheless, moviegoers should be entertained seeing that a cast of veteran stars such as Ving Rhames ("Mission Impossible"), Christopher Lloyd ("Back To The Future"), Richard Dreyfuss ("Jaws", "American Graffiti"), and Elisabeth Shue ("Leaving Las Vegas", "Deconstructing Harry", Back To The Future") still deliver a great performance as always! Other prominent stars like Jerry O' Connell, Kelly Brook, Adam Scott and Jessica Szohr look absolutely hot in "Piranha".
Overall, there's nothing much to watch in this movie, unless sexy, hot girls and special effects are your cup of tea. With a 'short-lived' storyline, would it signal a sequel to "Piranha"? You bet there is.Cinema Online, 02 September 2010
