FLIRTING SCHOLAR 2

The prequel to Stephen Chow`s famous scholar spoof from the Tang Dynasty returns to the big screen. This time, Tong Pak Fu was sent to a monastery when he was little. During one of his `secret` excursions with his friends, he bumps into Qian Qian (Zhang Jing Chu) and immediately falls in love with her. Unfortunately, Qian Qian is accused as a spider spirit. During her escape, she falls into a ravine, loses her memory and is given the name of Chau Heung by Madam Hua.

In what can only be regarded as a painful sequel, resurgent Lee Lik Chi's "Flirting Scholar 2" is a charmless banana peel comedy that is badly thought out, going down as a terrible blight on the 1993 Hong Kong classic starring Stephen Chow and Gong Li.

Yes, this is a senseless and unnecessary prequel, starring Huang Xiao Ming ("Ip Man 2") as Tong Bak Fu and Zhang Jing Chu ("Protege") as Chau Heung while Natalis Chan Pak Cheung, Richie Ren and Zhou Li Bo play the other three of The Four Great Scholars of Jiang Nan. Zhang Jing Chu's role is a play on "Painted Skin" and if you've had a chance to look at posters from other regions, you'd know that it's a movie in which Huang Xiao Ming pretends to be Wolverine from "X-Men" and Louis Fan does a Captain Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates" movies, not to mention a completely ridiculous WTF allegory to "Transformers" by Richie Ren. Some of the original cast even found their way back in too (Kingdom Yuen King Tan, Cheng Pei Pei and Mimi Chu Mi Mi) while there are cameos by Law Kar Ying and Cheung Tat Ming.

The less said about this movie, the better. All performances are an afterthought to the occasion and almost all gags fall flat but a particularly searing insult is when they paid tribute to the classic Siu Keung cockroach scene in the original.

If the recent "72 Tenants Of Prosperity" redo managed not to offend, it's highly disappointing that "Flirting Scholar" is so elaborate, expensive and largely unfunny. If you want a silly movie to laugh to, this really isn't it.
