Fortysomething straight-faced Cal (Steve Carrell) is living the dream - good job, nice house, great kid and married to his highschool sweetheart. But when Cal found out that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore) has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his "perfect" life quickly unravels. Cal who hasn`t dated in decades becomes wingman and protege to Jacob (Ryan Gosling) to learn how to date. Cal and Emily aren`t the only ones in the family looking for love in the wrong place as Cal`s 13-year-old son Robbie (Jonah Bobo) is crazy about 17-year-old babysitter Jessica (Analeigh Tipton) who harbours a crush on Cal.

Cal (Steve Carrel), 40-an telah merasakan yang dia mengecapi nikmat hidup seperti yang diidamkannya - Karier yang hebat, rumah mewah, anak - anak yang comel dan berkahwin dengan buah hati sejak sekolah. Namun, sebaik sahaja Cal dapat tahu yang isterinya, Emily (Julianne Moore) bermain kayu tiga dan ingin bercerai, kehidupan serba 'sempurnanya' jadi kucar kacir. Cal yang telah sekian lama tidak pernah keluar dengan perempuan lain, tidak semena- mena menjadi protege kepada jejaka 'kasanova', Jacob (Ryan Gosling). Dalam pada Cal belajar dari Jacob cara untuk mendapat wanita ideal, Cal dan Emily bukan satu - satunya dalam keluarga tersebut mencari dan jatuh cinta pada orang yang salah, anak bujang Cal, Robbie (Jonah Bobo), 13, turut menyimpan hati dengan pengasuh budak berusia 17 tahun, Jessica (Analeigh Tipton) yang dalam masa turut menyimpan hati pada Cal.
