According to the trailer, it shows that the film may be a prequel set in 1988, focusing on Katie and Kristi when they were younger and stalked by the demon, which was heavily mentioned in the first and second film. Although shown to be a prequel in the trailer, it is unconfirmed if it will be a parallel sequel like the previous film as well. The film is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman who directed the 2010 documentary "Catfish" together.
