Watch this if you liked: “Red Dawn” (1984) and “Independence Day”

"Red Dawn", a remake of the 1984 film of the same name, is finally released after a long delay from MGM, and depicts the story of a group of young people who defend their hometown from a North Korean invasion.

Starring Chris Hemsworth as the main lead, otherwise known as "Thor" in the Marvel Studios' film series, the Australian hunk plays a US marine named Jed Eckert who has just finished a tour in Iraq, and is coming home to his younger brother Matt and policeman father Tom Eckert, played by Josh Peck and Brett Cullen, respectively.

The plot is believable, if only references to actual American history are not made. A quote from the movie, "To them this is just a place, but to us, this is our home", contradicts the Asian American history in 1800's where citizens of Washington, driven by racism, invaded and burned down entire Asian American communities and drove Asian Americans from their homes and out of the State, forcing them onto trains to Oregon.

However the overly shaky camera works, especially during fighting scenes, is rather distracting at times, making it a challenge to fully focus on the scenes and enjoy the film. Also, the CGI for the film is not up to the standard set these days. The forest fire scene is clearly computer-generated, while in another, studio lights can be seen reflected in the water, just to name a few.

There are also a few plot loopholes, such as whether the North Koreans have the means to be a military threat to the US, and no proper build up or ending. Character development is also lacking, with stories not properly developed before the character is killed off.

An interesting fact is that the original villains in the movie were Chinese. However, with the Chinese box office making $1.5 billion in profit for American filmmakers per year, MGM made the decision to change the villains from the original Chinese to North Koreans in post-production.

In conclusion, if you are looking for some mindless fun, "Red Dawn" is an action-packed modern war film that makes you sit at the edge of the cinema seat right from the start to the end. Just do not dwell on it.
