"Maddened by his Absence" or "J'enrage De Son Absence" is a heartbreaking movie about dealing with death. Jacques is played by William Hurt ("The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby", "The Host") whose marriage to Mado (Alexandra Lamy) failed after their son died in a car accident. Unable to deal with the pain, he moves away from France and buries himself in work. Many years later, he returns to France when his father dies only to have to face his bitter past. He meets up with Mado who is remarried and has another child, Paul (Jalil Mehenni). Jacques and Paul form an oddly strong bond.

This is actress, Sandrine Bonnaire's movie directorial debut and a successful one at that. The movie is slow and meticulous which is necessary in order to fully grasp the depth of Jacques' sadness. It details the experience of losing your bearings after the death of a child even after many years have passed.

William Hurt's portrayal of Jacques is raw and sincere. The viewer can almost feel his pain and loss of will for life, especially towards the end of the movie. His co-star, Jalil Mehenni is one to look out for as well. Even at such a young age, he is able to portray a character with depth and believability. His character, Paul, empathizes with Jacques and seems to be an appropriate surrogate for Jacques longing for his own son.

One thing must be noted of this movie. The conclusion of this movie is messy but in a realistic manner as there is no proper, expected way to deal with such an experience. Like the main character, Jacques, if you are seeking closure in this movie, you won't find one.
