As the film begins, "The Colony" looked like it was going to be an intriguing post-apocalyptic thriller with a twist. In the future, global warming threatened humanity and to survive, they built weather controlling machines which then malfunctioned, leaving devastating effects to the planet. "One day it started to snow, and it never stopped."

As the film progresses, the intrigue slowly fades away and it is replaced by predictability. People are dying; food is scarce and is eventually non-existent. There hasn't been sunlight for many years and the common flu is now a deadly virus. On top of that, the remaining survivors of Colony 7 are hunted by a band of people who look like zombies, grunt like zombies and hunt humans like zombies. But are they really zombies?

Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton deliver an acceptable performance, considering the lack of character detailing required by the script. Kevin Zegers of TV's "Gossip Girl" fame takes the lead as the young and optimistic Sam who attempts to save Colony 7 and lead them to greener pastures.

Although the film is poorly scripted, the cast manages to scrape by and pull through without making any major blunders. There were some good CG effects throughout the film and although there's not much you can do with snow as far as the eye can see, the widescreen pictures were pretty impressive.

It's hard to pinpoint any unforgivable flaws in "The Colony". There was nothing that screamed 'must-watch' but at the same time, there's nothing that said 'avoid-at-all-cost'. It's the kind of film you'd stumble upon and watch on HBO or Cinemax and be entertained for a good 90 minutes.
