"The Last Days on Mars" is about a space crew on Mars at the end of their rotation and is about to head back to Earth, when they find the discovery of a lifetime, life on another planet. However, one of the crew members accidentally falls into a pit and dies, and their plans get complicated. Based on the short story "The Animators" by Sydney J. Bounds, it is directed by Ruairi Robinson.

Liev Schreiber is Vincent Campbell, the biggest name and protagonist of the film. He does a commendable job and is supported by actors like Elias Koteas, Olivia Williams and Romala Garai, who do their best to bring depth and believability to their stereotyped characters.

"The Last Days on Mars" combines two of the more popular genres in the industry, namely sci-fi and horror. It tries to bring something new, but it does not work.

"The Last Days on Mars" started with promise, with a shot of the Mars Rover giving a glimpse of the high production value of the show. It set the right tone even though the Martian Landscape looked like it was filmed on Earth in the Grand Canyon. The set design saves the show and makes it believable. However, once the action starts, the show veers into an entirely new direction, and it is not a good one.

The film has traces of Ridley Scott's "Alien", and also draws comparison to the sleeper hit "Moon" by Duncan Jones. Typical horror movie conventions can also be seen in the film, from the tons of blood, gore, foreboding sound effects and dark corridors. However, it is a good first time effort from the director, there are some moments that are genuinely toe-curling and will keep you glued to the screen in suspense and terror.

The film does have its tense moments, thanks to the sound design of the film and the soundtrack, which is top notch. The suits, sets, vehicles and effects are also top-notch, however, these are unable to lift the film from just a mediocre film to blockbuster levels.

"The Last Days on Mars" is a film with promise, top-notch effects and a great cast, however, the film fails to live up to its potential thanks to its script and typical movie conventions. One wonders if the film would have been a lot better if it leaned more towards the sci-fi then to the horror genre. Watch only if you are interested in a space horror film.
