Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

86-year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion: his eight-year-old grandson Billy, in "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa". This October, the signature Jackass characters Irving Zisman and Billy will take movie audiences along for the most insane hidden camera road trip ever captured on camera. Along the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places, and situations that give new meaning to the term "childrearing". The duo will encounter male strippers, disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons, and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens. Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy.

Watch this if you liked: "Jackass: The Movie", "Jackass Number 2", "Jackass 3-D" and "Miss Little Sunshine".

When Billy (Jackson Nicoll)'s mother is being put back in jail for violating her parole, she is forced to ask her father, Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville), whose wife had just died, to send his grandson into the custody of his estranged father, Chuck (Greg Harris), who lives up in North Carolina.

Taking the lead for the first time in the movie series that he has helped to produced, Johnny Knoxville puts on the prosthetic of an 86 year grandfather, as he takes his 8 year old 'grandson' on a (mis)adventure to harass innocent bystanders and draw the best shocks and reactions from them to be captured on camera for our amusement.

Unlike its predecessors, the formula of pulling seemingly random pranks gets a shakeup by introducing an actual story that forms the basis of a road movie. While the plot is nothing to shout about; more of a thinly written device to connect one major set piece to the next, it does have a function of being the motivating themes to give some narrative context into the planned pranks, and it actually has a surprisingly moving resolution when grandfather and grandson bond as false bonding goes.

As for the pranks itself, there is a balance of smaller segments done on the streets to help build anticipation for the longer and more outrageous set pieces that would have you both laughing and gob smacked like some of the priceless reactions that you would see from the intended targets. One of the best that is worth looking forward to is the prank that is pulled almost verbatim from "Little Miss Sunshine" to disrupt a children pageant.

On the street though, the pranks are more improvised and mainly done by harassing random strangers to get the best and worst out of them. While Knoxville's quest of looking to relive his eligible bachelorhood relies on being crass and a little repetitive, the ones done by Nicoll are refreshing when he disarms strangers who don't know how to react towards the approaches of an innocent child.

"Bad Grandpa" overall is an improvement of a formula that should have runs its course and stick to the small box, even though the changes are more refreshing than revolutionary. The added story element does help to differentiate "Bad Grandpa" itself from the series to have similarities closer to an actual movie going experience for those who need to see a purpose of why this deserves making a trip to the Cineplex. Otherwise, fans of the Jackass series, whether on television or on film, would find it easy to enjoy this fourth instalment.
