The Wasted Times

Set in war-torn 1930s Shanghai, Mr. Lu is ambushed during a meeting with the Japanese army but is saved by Watabe, his brother-in-law, who sacrifices his life to save him. Mr. Lu`s family, however, ends up getting killed by the Japanese. After years have passed and the Sino-Japanese war draws to a close, Mr. Lu visits Mrs. Wang, the abandoned wife of his former boss. She tells him that Watabe is not dead and is actually a Japanese spy who is responsible for the deaths of his family members. Mr. Lu now searches for Watabe to make him pay for his sins.

The Good, the Bad and the Dubious Alliance:

• A film set against the backdrop of the second Sino-Japanese War, featuring Asia's most accomplished stars and a plot laced with sex and violence, but the film fails to impress due to its confusing and poorly-paced story.

• One of the reasons why the film is hard to follow is because the story spans more than a decade, roughly thirteen years or so in total, having a lot of flashbacks as it jumps back and forth.

• Even though the drama fails to engage, the colours, texture, and visual style make up for a lot, especially the realistic setting of pre-war Shanghai complete with Art Deco apartments, marble palaces, sleek limousines and expensive wardrobes.
