After narrowly escaping death, Takakura quits his job as a police detective and starts anew as a criminal psychology lecturer. However, he receives a request from his ex-colleague Nogami to help investigate an unsolved six-year-old case involving a missing family. Meanwhile, Takukara and his wife move into a new neighborhood. One of their neighbours, Nishino, has a sick wife and a young daughter named Mio. Takakura begins to investigate on the case but a strange thing happened when one day, Mio visits his house and tells him that the man in her house is not her father and that she doesn`t know him.

Selepas terselamat daripada kematian, Takakura berhenti kerja sebagai detektif polis dan memulakan hidup baru sebagai pensyarah psikologi. Bagaimanapun, dia menerima permintaan daripada bekas rakan kerjanya, Nogami, untuk membantu menyiasat kes yang sudah enam tahun tidak selesai iaitu membabitkan kehilangan sebuah keluarga. Sementara itu, Takukara dan isterinya telah berpindah ke kejiranan baru. Salah seorang jiran mereka, Nishino, mempunyai isteri yang sedang sakit dan anak perempuan bernama Mio. Takakura mula menyiasat kes tersebut tetapi perkara aneh berlaku apabila satu hari Mio melawat rumahnya dan memberitahu yang lelaki di rumahnya bukan ayahnya dan dia tidak tahu siapa lelaki itu.
