Based on a Japanese anime of the same name, childhood friends and classmates Chihaya and Taichi meet Arata, a karuta prodigy who introduces the two to the world of competitive karuta, a Japanese card game inspired by the classic Japanese anthology of Hundred Poets. The trio becomes close friends and spends their days playing karuta. The three of them then part ways following their elementary school graduation. Four years later, Chihaya is a high school student and still continues to play the game. She reunites with Taichi, and together they start a karuta club in order to enter the national championships, and also to one day reunite with Arata once again.

Apabila Chihaya Ayase berada di gred 6 di sekolah rendah, dia bertemu Arata Wataya. Arata adalah dari sekolah di Wilayah Fukui. Arata mula rapat dengan Chihaya dan Taichi Mashima, rakan Chihaya sejak kecil lagi, dan mereka sama-sama bermain kad permainan 'karuta'. Empat tahun kemudian, mereka masing-masing belajar di sekolah berlainan dan sudah bergelar pelajar sekolah tinggi. Chihaya mendapat tahu Arata yang balik semula ke Wilayah Fukui tetapi tidak lagi bermain karuta. Percaya mereka akan bertemu semula dengan Arata, Chihaya dan Taichi menubuhkan kelab karuta di sekolah tinggi.
