Ryota is a private detective who keeps dwelling on his past glory as a prize-winning author. He uses up all of the money he makes on gambling and can barely pay child support. After his father`s death, his aging mother and beautiful ex-wife seem to be moving on with their lives while Ryota is still stuck in his past. As he tries to reconnect with his distrustful family, Ryota struggles to take back control of his existence and to find a lasting place his young son`s life - until a stormy summer night offers them a chance to truly bond again.

The Good, the Bad and the Stormy Night:

• A beautiful melancholic tale of a broken family reunited by a typhoon.

• Simple in design but brilliant in execution, the film is definitely one of director Koreeda's most satisfying efforts.

• The cast is all marvellous in their roles, but one person stands out from the rest, and she is none other than veteran actress Kirin Kiki who often provides the light-hearted humour in this bittersweet comedy.
