Concert cellist Louka is a concert cellist is a middle-aged Czech man dedicated to bachelorhood and a huge lady`s man who also struggles to make a living after losing his place in the state orchestra. To make ends meet, he plays at funerals and paints tombstones, but he runs up a large amount of debt. His friend offers him a chance to earn a lot of money through a sham marriage to a Russian woman so that she can continue living in Czechoslovakia. The woman then uses her new citizenship to emigrate to West Germany, where her boyfriend lives, living behind her five-year-old son Kolya with Louka. Though at first the two are unable to communicate as they don`t speak each other`s languages but gradually, they form an unlikely bond.

Franta Louka adalah seorang pemain selo di Czechoslovakia ketika penjajahan Soviet dan merupakan seorang bujang. Apabila dia kehilangan tempat dalam kumpulan orkestra, dia perlu mencari duit dengan bermain selo di majlis pengebumian dan mengecat batu nisan. Tetapi apabila hutangnya semakin banyak, rakannya Mr Broz telah mencadangkan skim untuk membuat wang banyak dengan berkahwin dengan seorang wanita Rusia supaya dia dapat dokumen Czech, dan dia telah bersetuju. Wanita itu mengambil kesempatan di atas situasi berkenaan dengan berpindah ke Jerman Barat untuk bertemu kekasihnya dan meninggalkan anak lelakinya Kolya yang berusia lima tahun dengan Louka.
