A Hong Kong-exiled filmmaker travels to Taiwan, with her husband and their toddler in tow, to a film festival to present her film that has been banned in China. Meanwhile, her ailing mother is vacationing there with a tour group. She has timed the visit to meet her mother but to avoid attracting unwanted attention, she and her family shadow the tour`s itinerary and meet up with her mother during mealtimes and photo stops.

Berdasarkan kisah hidup sebenar pengarah Ying Liang. Seorang pembikin filem serta suami dan anaknya pergi ke Taiwan untuk menghadiri sebuah festival filem, di mana filemnya yang diharamkan di Tanah Besar China bakal ditayangkan. Bertemankan keluarganya, dia sempat menziarahi ibunya yang dalam masa yang sama telah menyertai kumpulan mengembara sekeliling Taiwan di dalam sebuah bas. Bagi mengelakkan perhatian orang ramai, keluarga itu menyamar sebagai penduduk tempatan dan mengekori bas itu supaya mereka boleh berjumpa dengan ibu pembikin filem itu setipa kali bas itu berhenti.
