12-year-old Martha Jane and her family are headed West in search of a better life in 1863 America. When her father gets injured, she learns to drive their family`s large covered wagon train and takes care of her siblings. She dresses as a boy and is often outspoken and bold, which rubs certain people in the community the wrong way. When Abraham, the convoy`s leader, accuses her of stealing, she sets out to prove her innocence and while doing so, discovers herself and a world that confirms her unique personality.

Berlatarkan tahun 1863 di Amerika Syarikat, di mana Martha Jane, yang berusia 12 tahun, dan keluarganya ingin berpindah ke Barat untuk memulakan hidup baru. Namun apabila bapanya cedera parah akibat sebuah kemalangan, Martha perlu mengambil alih untuk menjaga adik beradiknya dan belajar memandu gerabak mereka. Walau bagaimanapun, sikapnya yang terlalu berani dan penampilannya seperti lelaki menyebabkan dia sering terlibat dalam masalah dengan orang lain yang tidak sukakannya. Apabila Martha telah dituduh mencuri, dia bertindak melarikan diri untuk mencari bukti bahawa dia tidak bersalah. Dalam pengembaraannya, Martha mula menerokai diri dan personalitinya yang sebenar.
