17 Jun – We've heard him voicing Lumière in Disney's live-action "Beauty and the Beast", next we'll hear Ewan McGregor lending his voice to the famous talking cricket in "Pinocchio".

This won't be the Disney live-action take, though there is one in the works; this will be the stop motion adaptation helmed by horror maestro Guillermo del Toro.

Slash Film reported that McGregor revealed his involvement in del Toro's project in a recent interview with ACE Universe, stating that he is voicing the tiny talking insect who acts as Pinocchio's conscience.

"I'm playing Jiminy Cricket in Guillermo del Toro's version of Pinocchio. That I had started working on before I left for New York, so some of that is recorded.

"And of course it's stop-motion animated so it's going to take them a great long time to make that film. But my first part, which is recording his dialogue, is sort of done," he said.

He also teased that there "may or may not be a song that has to be recorded", adding "I'm not sure I'm at liberty to discuss that."

Fans could possibly be hearing McGregor's singing voice in the movie since del Toro did previously mention that he is planning for it to be a musical. The director stated so when he announced back in 2018 that Netflix was giving him a chance to finally make the movie that he's always wanted to do.

"Pinocchio" is expected to be released on the streaming platform sometime next year.

The movie marks del Toro's first time helming an animated film, which he is co-directing with "Fantastic Mr. Fox" animation director Mark Gustafson.

Coming from del Toro, it will definitely be a much grimmer take on Italian writer Carlo Collodi's 1883 children's book "The Adventures of Pinocchio", which has received various small screen and big screen adaptations over the decades.

As mentioned above, del Toro's version will be facing some competition from Disney, who is also making a live-action version of "Pinocchio" based on the book and Disney's own 1940 animated adaptation of the same name.

The project was announced in 2015 with "Paddington" director Paul King tapped to helm it three years later. However, following King's departure, Robert Zemeckis, who is well-known for his works in animated and fantasy films, signed on to direct the project back in January 2020. Disney has yet to set a release date.
