As with Disney's 1951 cartoon, Tim Burton's version will mix Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with Through the Looking Glass and some ideas of his own. Burton's story chronicles Alice's second trip to Wonderland, roughly 10 years after her first visit in the book. She doesn't remember her first trip down the rabbit hole, but everyone else in Wonderland does. Soon, she is reunited with its inhabitants, including a swashbuckling Dormouse, an off-his-rocker Mad Hatter, a grinning Cheshire Cat, a caterpillar called Absolem, a beautiful White Queen and her spiteful older sister the Red Queen. Let's see how Tim Burton's characters fair against Disney's.

Then, Alice was only 11 or 12 years old. Now, at 19 years old, Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska) continues to maintain her simpleton dress, ditching her white pinafore overtop and adding some curls to her previously straight do. Plus, she has on a pair of stylish striped, fingerless gloves. Sweet! But for some reason, I prefer the way she looked in Disney. Very cute and less dead.

The Mad Hatter just got madder! Apparently, he was affected by mercury poisoning due to an unfortunate side effect of the hat-making process. However, his hat decorating skills have mightily been improved, replacing his dark green sash with a pink one and packing on the details like peacock feathers and hair sticks. What's more, he has a much better looking cravat! Now with big yellow eyes, a pale face and bright orange hair, Johnny Depp's scary Mad Hatter radiates insanity. Guessing he'll be the all the rage during this year's Halloween celebration.

"Off with the pounds!" Frankly, the Queen of Hearts never looked this good. Having lost the extra weight (or which might have just went up to her head), I'm in love with the heart-shaped geisha-like lipstick on Helena Bonham Carter's pasty white face. The candy apple red hair is also a nice touch. Her outfit is amazingly intricate and ladylike, which ditches her previous butch like exterior. Women in power - especially the violent, vicious ones - are sexy these days.

There was no White Queen in Disney's animated version. However, she was a character in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. Played by "Princess Diaries" star Anne Hathaway, she comes across looking as a bride and the stark contrast of her blood red lipstick against her white radiance is perfect; she is after all the younger sister of the Red Queen. She is a beautiful eccentric who floats instead of walking and although she appears to be all sweet and light, beneath the surface there's a hint of darkness.

No wonder these fellers looked familiar, the rotund twin brothers are played by English comedian of the "Little Britain" TV series, Matt Lucas! Losing their orange hair and practically everything else, except the chubby trait, Burton offers a very classic look of two young boys during their schooling days. Appearing very child-like, they speak in weird rhythms and riddles and are often less than helpful, although they mean well.

Crispin Glover ("Willard") dons as the head of the Red Queen's Army. He appeared very briefly in Disney's version during his trial in court for tart robbery in which the King of Hearts presides as judge. Seven feet, six-inches tall, with a scarred face and a heart-shaped patch covering his left eye, oddly enough - he looks like Johnny Depp!

The mysterious appearing and disappearing cat (voice of Stephen Fry) turns grey with bright turquoise stripes in this version. With an adorable attention-seeking expression, the dapper tabby now has big, gorgeous eyes and a seduction smile that's enchanting as ever before.

After all that carrot consumption, the While Rabbit regains his good eyesight and throws away his frameless round glasses. Voiced by Michael Sheen, the rabbit is a loveable character who's always worried about being late, always in a hurry, and always rushing about.

This hare could do with a wackier look, no? Host of Mad Hatter's Tea Parties, the March Hare (voiced by Paul Whitehouse) had turned haggard and grey, and appears as if he's lost his wife, kids and dog (that is, if he had one). No doubt, he needs a bit of grooming.

The sleepy dormouse turns swashbuckling in Burton's version as he looks spiffy in his pirate-ish outfit, whilst wearing riding breeches? Truly an upgrade for this character, voiced by Barbara Windsor.

When will this shisha loving caterpillar get lung cancer? Voiced by Alan Rickman, the very old Absolem never looked more of a caterpillar as compared to the Disney version! Constantly blowing out smoke and questioning Alice "Who are you?", I'm sure we all can't wait to see what sort of beautiful smoke art he can rake up for us this time.

Looking more Dodo than anything, he is now blue-feathered and his jacket sleeves are cut off (to suit his shorts arms... I mean, wings). When the animators began to design the Dodo (voice of Michael Gough), their first port of call for reference was Google Image Search, followed by London's Natural History Museum. Guess that explains everything.
