Chris Hemsworth is rejoining this big sci-fi franchise

18 Jul – "Star Trek Beyond" has yet to hit the big screen but producer J.J. Abrams is already teasing fans about a movie beyond the upcoming third one.

"Yes, and there's something that hopefully we're figurative minutes away from talking about," said the filmmaker who directed the first two movies in the "Star Trek" reboot franchise. "But the answer is 100 percent yes, and it's incredibly exciting."

However, most exciting for Trekkies who are also Chris Hemsworth fans would be the news that Abrams later shared with Access Hollywood's Scott Matz, which the latter posted onto Twitter, announcing that Hemsworth will be returning to the franchise in the next instalment.

"J. J. Abrams confirms to me that a 4th "Star Trek" movie will bring together Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth!" the post read.

While Abrams did not reveal Hemsworth's character and how he will be incorporated into the fourth movie, it is speculated that the Australian actor will be reprising his role as the father of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), George Kirk.

Time travel will reportedly be a major force in the plot in bringing the father and son together on the big screen.

Hemsworth portrayed the character in 2009's "Star Trek", before hitting it big a couple of years later as Marvel's god of thunder, Thor. He later returned to voice the older Kirk again in 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness" but did not make any onscreen appearance.

The 32-year-old can currently be seen as a funny secretary in the rebooted all-female "Ghostbusters" and will be seen next year leading "Thor: Ragnarok".

Directed by Justin Lin, the coming soon "Star Trek Beyond" sees the return of Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, and John Cho as the recently-announced-as-gay Sulu.

"Star Trek Beyond" beams into cinemas this 21 July.
