"Captain America: Civil War" is 2016's top grossing movie

"Captain America" stands tall among other superhero movies this year.

20 May – The moment it was released, fans around the globe knew the latest "Captain America" instalment will easily win the war of highest-grossing movies this year.

"Captain America: Civil War" is now the top grossing movie of 2016 so far, with a collection of USD981.9 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo stats.

In Asian markets alone, the movie – which has been garnering positive reviews and awarded an A CinemaScore by audiences – has been collecting millions since its release back in April, key markets include Malaysia (USD10.3 million), Thailand (USD11.3 million), Hong Kong (USD14.7 million) as well as the biggest contributor, China, with USD164.3 million.

Inching toward the USD1 billion mark, which the action movie is expected to reach by this weekend, it will also become the sixth superhero movie to do so.

It trails behind fellow Marvel movies, "The Avengers" (USD1.52 billion – fifth highest-grossing movie of all time), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (USD1.41 billion), "Iron Man 3" (USD1.22 billion), as well as "The Dark Knight Rises" (USD1.09 billion) and "The Dark Knight" (USD1.04 billion).

"Captain America: Civil War" wins the battle of the box office, so far.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the movie sees Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans) going up against Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr).

Also featured in the movie are Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Sam Wilson / Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), The Vision (Paul Bettany), Clint Barton / Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Jim Rhodes/War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

Chadwick Boseman also makes an appearance as T'Challa / Black Panther, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang / Ant-Man, and Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man.

Most of the aforementioned actors will be reprising their roles in the upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War Part I" and "Avengers: Infinity War Part II" as well as 2017's standalone "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and 2018's "Marvel's Black Panther".
